Byrne Organ Builders P.O. Box 260 GILLITTS 3610 31 May 2003 Attention Mr. Derek Byrne Dear Mr Byrne The Bryceson "Three Centuries Organ" installed in St Joseph’s Catholic Church, Howick. On behalf of the members of the Rotary Club of Hilton & Howick and the Millennium Organ Committee of St. Joseph’s Church I write to thank you and your staff for the dedicated support provided by your company during the renovation and installation of the a 120 year-old Bryceson pipe organ – a millennium gift of St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Holt, Norfolk, UK. As the organ is a benchmark instrument, recorded in the annals of the British Institute of Organ Studies (BIOS), it was essential that the organ be re-erected as it was in its Victorian heyday. The professional manner in which Byrne Organ Builders advised us and undertook the most important of the restoration requirements in its Pinetown factory is deeply appreciated by all concerned. We knew that work of the standard set by your company would not come cheaply, but are thrilled at the result – an instrument which is giving us no trouble at all and is a joy to hear and to behold with its unique stencilled pipes in the front and side casework I also wish to comment upon the way in which you tuned the 15-rank instrument for our first public concert. Gerard’d du Toit, Director of Music at Michaelhouse, who was the first person to play the Bryceson organ in this country, could not help remarking upon his pleasure at finding an instrument in KwaZulu-Natal that was really in tune! The five Rotarians and the fifteen Howick citizens who worked for 10 months to re-erect the organ are unanimous that we could never have achieved the standards required by BIOS without the ongoing guidance and unstinting support of Byrne Organ Builders. The organ is a pleasure to play, sounds magnificent and is attracting scores of new faces to the services at the church. Once again please convey our grateful thanks and good wishes to all members of your staff for what they helped us to achieve. Yours sincerely
J.R. TUNGAY M.P.R.I. Organist Emeritus
